What the Demons Did


in town, they made us bare
our throats, searched us top to tail

first we tasted copper on our tongues
then thirst then transmutation

they tried to make us talk – but you
know small towns – we stick together

next the translucence of thumbnails
tubs filled with water from rusty taps

tired of all our wailing, they left us alone
but not you – they took you in April

through a small square of window
thin branches budding with spring
